Creating a library in Dreamweaver 8 enables you to reuse common elements throughout a site without having to recreate the element on each page on which it appears. The real power of a library item is that you can edit an item once and the change will be reflected in each location that the element appears. Using, editing and deleting library items in Dreamweaver 8 is simple.

To use a library item in Dreamweaver 8, simply select the location on a page where the element should appear in either Code View or Design View. You may simply drag the item from the library to the location. Alternately, you can insert the item into the selected location by selecting it from the library panel and clicking Insert at the bottom of the Assets panel. In some cases, you may want to prevent a library item from being updated when the item is edited. If this is the case, select the library item on the page and open the Properties panel. Select the "Detach From Original" button. Your selected item is now disconnected from the Library and will not be updated if changes are made to the master file.

To edit a library item, select it and double-click it or select the "Edit" icon, which appears to be a "pencil and paper" at the bottom of the pane. The library item will open in the editing pane. You will see the code and a visual representation of the item being edited. Make your changes as needed. Save your changes. Dreamweaver 8 will present you with an "Update Library Items" dialogue box. If you would like the changes to be made to pages that use the edited item, you may choose that option. Otherwise, no changes will be visible to pages on which the library item appears.

You may also rename library items. You will not disrupt existing links to active pages by renaming a library item. To rename a library item, select it and click the Menu button at the top right of the Assets panel. Choose Rename and enter your element's new name. Press enter. Dreamweaver 8 will ask if you want to update the pages that use the library item. Updating the item will cause the existing instances of the library item to be renamed.

Deleting a library item is simple. Select it and press the trashcan icon. The item is removed from the library. Deleting an item from the library does not delete it from the pages on which it appears. To delete a library item from a page, you'll need to edit the page itself and remove it as you would remove any other unwanted element.

Using, editing and deleting library items in Dreamweaver 8 is simple, and is what makes using the Library valuable. Generally, the Library is a flexible tool that can save time and yield more accurate and uniform pages throughout a site.
